Concrete Needs are the practical and tangible resources that individuals and families require to meet their basic needs. This includes things like food, shelter, clothing, transportation, daycare and healthcare. When individuals and families have access to these necessities, they are better equipped to cope with challenges and build resilience.
The Significance of This Protective Factor
Reduces Stress: Access to basic necessities can significantly reduce stress and anxiety, allowing families to focus on other important aspects of their lives. This allows parents to focus more on parenting their children and monitoring their development needs.
Improves Health: Adequate nutrition, shelter, and healthcare are essential for maintaining physical and mental health of all members in the family.
Enhances Stability: Concrete Needs provide a foundation of stability, enabling families to make progress towards their goals.
Concrete Support in Times of Need Has Far-Reaching Implications for the Community
The impact of protective factors goes beyond positive effects on individual families. Concrete support in times of need contributes to stronger families and communities, reduced crime, improved educational outcomes, and improved economic health. Communities with strong families are more likely to thrive and be resilient due to the positive impact of effective parenting, healthy and safe families.
When individuals and families have their basic needs met, they are less likely to engage in criminal activity. Families facing food insecurity may feel compelled to resort to theft or turn to illegal sources of income to provide for their needs. Communities with strong social safety nets and ample resources are more resilient and cohesive. This allows for families to thrive within the community creating more success in themselves as well as in their children. When families are able to have all of their needs met, are able to make to work more often as well as being more likely to contribute to the society as a whole, creating improved economic health.
